Il obtint son B.Sc. en chimie de l’Université de Montréal en 2005\, au sein de la première cohorte du programme révisé du baccalauréat. Ses études ont été ponctuées de stages au sein des groupes de Prof. James D. Wuest (chimie supramoléculaire) et de Prof. Juan C. (Tito) Scaiano (Université d’Ottawa\, spécialiste en photochimie). Il intégra ensuite le groupe de Pr. James D. Wuest afin de poursuivre sa formation en chimie supramoléculaire\, obtenant son doctorat en 2010 après avoir étudié les motifs de reconnaissances de l’hexaphénylbenzène et ses dérivés.  \n   \nSuivant un court stage post-doctoral avec Prof. Mario Leclerc à l’Université Laval\, il décrocha un premier emploi de chercheur R&D au sein de Saint-Jean Photochimie (maintenant DIC chimitronique)\, où il participa à la synthèse et à mise à l’échelle industrielle de produits dédiés à la microélectronique tels que des colorants cyanine et des dérivés de thiophène et de fluorène. Par la suite\, il travailla chez Oleotek Inc. (maintenant Kemitek Inc.)\, un centre collégial de transfert de technologie spécialisé en oléochimie\, en chimie verte\, en mise à l’échelle de procédés\, et en formulation. Il se familiarisera alors avec de nombreux types de matériaux\, tels que les savons\, les lubrifiants\, les élastomères et diverses résines thermodurcissables. Depuis 2017\, il occupe le poste de Chargé de projets – Recherche et développement chez Soprema Canada. Il y supervise une équipe de quatre techniciens et chimistes\, visant à développer de nouveaux matériaux afin d’assurer l’étanchéité de bâtiments et de divers ouvrages d’arts. Ces matériaux ont notamment servi à protéger les structures de béton des ponts Champlain et Pierre-Laporte\, du REM ainsi que divers stationnements souterrains et entrepôts.  \n  \nEric Gagnon profitera de cette occasion pour expliquer le rôle central que peut occuper un chimiste qualifié au sein d’un département de R&D d’une entreprise comptant 9000 collaborateurs. Wuest to continue his training in supramolecular chemistry\, obtaining his Ph.D. in 2010 after studying the recognition patterns of hexaphenylbenzene and its derivatives.  \n  \nFollowing a short postdoctoral internship with Professor Mario Leclerc at Laval University\, he landed his first job as an R&D researcher at Saint-Jean Photochemin (now DIC chimitronique)\, where he participated in the synthesis and industrial scale-up of products dedicated to microelectronics such as cyanine dyes as well as thiophene and fluorene derivatives. Subsequently\, he worked at Kemitek Inc. (formerly Kemitek Inc.)\, a college technology transfer center specializing in oleochemistry\, green chemistry\, process scaling\, and formulation. There\, he then became familiar with many materials\, such as soaps\, lubricants\, elastomers and various thermosetting resins. Since 2017\, he holds the position of Project Manager – Research and Development at Soprema Canada. There\, he supervises a team of four technicians and chemists\, aiming to develop new materials to ensure the waterproofing of buildings and various structures. These materials were notably used to protect the concrete structures of the Champlain and Pierre-Laporte bridges\, the REM as well as various underground parking lots and warehouses.  \n  \nEric Gagnon will take this opportunity to explain the central role that a qualified chemist can play within an R&D department of a company with 9\,000 employees.
